Hey there, all! This is just a friendly reminder that tomorrow's dress rehearsal will begin at 11:00 a.m. I've sent you an email regarding what you need for shoes and tights - please bring them in if you have them, and if you don't, bring someone that could be a temporary substitute. (Unless, of course, you're wearing something we already have in the costume room.) Alyssa, I pulled a pair of shoes for Man Beatrice from the costume room - they aren't boots, but they'll do, so don't worry about that. You'll still need character shoes for Woman Beatrice. Also, Simon and Alyssa, it would be awesome if you have any black belts you could bring in - old-fashioned looking would be better, but anything would do - we need it for your sword. James, don't forget to bring in the belt you wore for ItW.

Don't forget your stage makeup kits, either! And it would be awesome if I could get a song request from those of you who haven't sent me one yet.

One more thing - technically, we are supposed to have an adult supervisor for late-night rehearsals. My mom will be there tomorrow, and Mrs Woods on Monday, but does anyone have a parent who would be willing to come to Tuesday or Wednesday's rehearsal? They won't have to do anything - they can watch the show if they like, or they can just sit in the cafeteria and work on anything they might need to. I know my mom plans on just bringing her sewing machine and working in the cafeteria. Anyway, let me know.

Elizabeth

P.S. Here's the shoes/tights list.

Attached is a list of my ideas for shoes and socks/tights for each of your characters in Servant. Please email me to let me know which of these items you already have, and if you don't have them, whether you'll be able to purchase them. Bring what you have to our dress rehearsal on Sunday.

Lauren, Patty, and Christina: After looking at the dresses again, I've decided that black jazz shoes (preferably the ankle cut) would be better than character shoes. You'll also need black tights.

Marley: I'd like you to bring in those brown lace-up boots you have, so we can see how they look, and white tights

Franny & Kendall: the shoes we tried on in the costume room, black tights

Jenny: black jazz boots (the high-top ones; do you have a pair from Oklahoma?), white tights

Alexia: the white boots you tried on, white tights

Sean: Do you own any colorful high-top converses? If not, we can buy a pair. I'm going to try and find argyle socks, too.

Alyssa: I'm going to try and find a pair of boots for you, but do you know if you'll have time to shop before the show? We can reimburse you, and I'll tell you what I'm looking for. If you don't have time, I can try to find them. For your sex change: black character shoes and black tights

Simon & James: the ItW boots - and since they're boots, it doesn't really matter what kind of socks you wear

Thanks a lot, guys! I'll see you either tomorrow or Sunday. A couple more things: we may have a photo shoot on Sunday, in costume, before we do our run. It will either be me taking photos, or my mom with her really jazzy camera, or both of us. On Monday, Mrs. Woods is coming to take notes on our show. We did this for Plaffter, and it helped a LOT - she had some really good suggestions, and I think it really helped us with character development. It's always good to get another person's perspective.

Also, thanks for the birthday surprise today - it REALLY made my day. :D

You guys were awesome today!!!! Everyone was focused and enthusiastic, lines were pretty good, and I saw people making a lot of headway in terms of character and scene development. I'm really pleased.

Tomorrow's rehearsal is posted as TBA. We are running Act III, since I think that needs the most work. If we finish with enough time (which we probably will), we will run Act I. Saturday is our first run-through, so be ready for that. I know most of the rehearsals following that are TBA. They will probably be run-throughs, but I was leaving the flexibility in case I decided to do something different. And just a heads-up: I'm not sure yet, but I'm thinking of scheduling our Italian rehearsal for Monday, March 19.

IMPORTANT: If you haven't yet given me your shirt orders, please email me tonight. I don't need money yet, but I do need to know whether you want a shirt, sweatshirt, or both, and what size(s). I would like to order shirts tonight. Thx.

Rehearsal was fairly hectic and disorganized today, and a lot of that was my fault, so I'm sorry. Thank you for being patient. (It's also gotta be pretty hard rehearsing while techs are walking on the stage. :P)

In regards to lines: Some of you did a really great job (and no one was a total disaster, either.) The good thing about this is that it gives you an idea of where you are in terms of memorization. If you aren't there yet: you know what you need to do. Get them down. I realize there's a lot going on, but you need to make it a priority. Your next Act I rehearsal is Friday.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we are rehearsing Act III, so study those lines right now if you can. I have been asked to re-post our rehearsal schedule, and there will also be one in the window of the LT.

You guys are awesome, and I know the show is going to come together beautifully. Just learn your lines so you can be even awesomer. :D

::ducks a latchkey thrown by Marley due to the fact that "awesomer" is not actually a word::

Elizabeth

P.S. one more thing - 23 days. We have plenty of time to put together an amazing show, but keep this number in mind.

05:33 pm - Schedule Change
Wednesday, March 7's rehearsal is scheduled to run from 4:15 to 6:15, but because Sean doesn't have drum lessons and because Saratoga Idol (which you should all go to!) is that night at 7:00, I'd like to move it to 2:45-5:00. Would this disrupt anyone's schedule?

Also, I've noticed that sometimes cast members who aren't called on a specific day will come anyway and hang out with actors offstage. This is totally fine; after all, you are part of the cast. However, for Monday's rehearsal, I would like to request that we keep it to just the four people rehearsing that day (Sean, Jenny, James, and Alyssa) - just because I'd like as few distractions as possible. Thanks for your cooperation. Don't worry, because after Monday we'll pretty much be running through an act a day, so you all get to be here every day!

Go to the Jazz Cabaret! It'll be amazing, I promise!

10:47 pm - An Update...
Next Monday's rehearsal (March 5 from 3:15-5:30) has been labeled as TBA, and I would like to call Truffaldino, Smeraldina, Florindo, and Beatrice.

Also, seeing as after tomorrow's rehearsal, we will only have four weeks until we open, I want you to start thinking of these next four weeks as crunch time. You all have been great so far; thank you for all of the energy and focus you've brought to rehearsal. I have no doubt that we can prepare ourselves in that amount of time, but know that things are going to start moving faster. So, for whoever it was who asked when my "getting mad" day would be in terms of line memorization, we will be running all of Act I on Tuesday, and no scripts will be allowed onstage. Thank you for the work you've done so far on your lines, but get them nailed over the weekend. This is very, very important. I know from experience that the more you work a show on its feet, the easier it is to memorize, and I'm sorry you haven't had more time to rehearse with your scripts, but because of our limited time span, this is what we have to do. Thanks for your hard work.

Here's my thinking for Thursday's rehearsal (March 1). I would really like to run through the serving scene a couple more times - especially since we haven't done it with Patty yet. I'm pretty sure everyone in that scene said they could come, so I'd like to work on that once we get back from the drama field trip. I'm anticipating that we'd need no more than half an hour. I'd need Nora, Dora, Pandora, Truffaldino, Florindo, and Beatrice. We're supposed to be back around 5:15 or 5:30, but obviously that isn't exact, so if you aren't in Drama 3 or Drama 4, I can call you to let you know what time rehearsal will start. Let me know how this works. Thanks everyone!

First of all, I figure that this can't be said enough: I love you and am so pleased with everything you've been doing! Keep up the good work! Remember, I see all of you tomorrow (Tuesday.) (Schedule for Wednesday has been changed slightly. I'm now calling Beatrice, Silvio, Clarice, Pantalone, Truffaldino, and Smeraldina - most of you were already called, so this is just a heads-up.)

Also, we have run into a slight glitch because of the field trip for Dramas 3 & 4, which is on Thursday and isn't due to end until 5:15 or 5:30. I really want to run Act II that day, but if we did it after the field trip, we probably wouldn't end until 7:30 to 7:45. Does anyone think Thursday is going to be a busy homework night for them? How do you feel about that?

I'm sorry about the confusion! For anyone who was wondering, yes, there is rehearsal tomorrow (Tuesday.) It's from 3:30-6:00, and we are blocking Act III plus the two scenes from Act II that we skipped last time. All of the information about who is called when (for the days following Tuesday) will be on the rehearsal schedule I posted that (so far) hasn't changed.

For those of you who don't understand the letters-and-numbers system - I'm sorry for the confusion, but don't worry! Just show up on the days you are called (all of which is on the rehearsal schedule) and you'll be fine. I'll tell you what we're doing. If you do understand my garbled system, you can use it to find out which scenes you are rehearsing on which days - just in case you wanted a heads-up.

Once again, sorry about the confusion! I hope this clears things up. Rest up, and I'll see you tomorrow!

Hello, beauties! I know many of you are in the midst of Into the Woods (which, by the way, was INCREDIBLE, and I can't wait to see it for the third time on Sunday!), but in case any of you were curious, I'm listing a scene breakdown that will tell you what we're doing when for the next couple weeks of rehearsals. First of all, so that you can understand my shorthand, all of the scenes are labeled in the script with numbers and I am attaching the letters A, B, and C to signify the acts. (For example, Act II, scene 15 would be labeled 15B). I am also using abbreviations for the characters. These are the same abbreviations that I use when making notes in my script, and in case I happen to be using them again, it might be good for you to know them (although they're pretty self-explanatory):

Be = Beatrice
Br = Brighella
C = Clarice
D = Dora
F = Florindo
ID = Il Dottore
N = Nora
Pd = Pandora
Pn = Pantalone
Si = Silvio
Sm = Smeraldina
T = Truffaldino

(Also, I know sooner or later that I'm going to be asked why there is no 16B. Yes, I did that on purpose. We are rehearsing it later.)

Wednesday, February 14 - Smeraldina, Clarice, Silvio, Pantalone, Il Dottore
1B (Si, ID); 2B (Pn, ID); 3B (Pn, Si); 4B (Be, Pn, Si); 5B (C, Be, Si); 6B (Si, C); 7B (Sm, C, Si); 8B (Sm, Si); 9B (Si); 4C (ID, Pn); 5C (Pn, Si)

Thursday, February 15 - Nora, Dora, Pandora, Brighella, Pantalone, Truffaldino, Florindo, Beatrice
7A (F, N, Pd, T); 9A (T, Be, Br); 15A (starting with end of 14A) (D, T, Be); 12B (T, Br); 13B (T, Br, Be, Pn); 14B (Be, Pn, N, D, T); 15B (Pd, T, N, D, F, Be); 1C (N, D, Pd, T); 6C (Br, F, Be); 7C (F, Be, Br); 8C (F, Be); 9C (F, Be, Br, T)

Monday, February 26 - Truffaldino, Beatrice, Florindo
6A (T); 8A (T, F); 12A (F); 13A (T, F); 14A (up until D's entrance) (T); 17A (T, F); 10B (T, F); 11B (T, Be); 18B (T, Be, F); 19B (T, F); 2C (T, F)

Tuesday, February 27 - all
1A (most of cast); 2A (most of cast); 3A (most of cast); 4A (Pn, Be, Br); 5A (Be, Br); 10A (Si, T); 11A (Si, T, F); 10C (Pn, Si, ID, C, Sm); 11C (all of 10A plus Br); 12C (all of 11A plus Be); 13C (all of 12C plus T, N, D, Pd); Final Scene (everyone)

Wednesday, February 28 - Clarice, Pantalone, Beatrice, Smeraldina, Truffaldino
16A (T, Pn); 18A (C, Pn, Sm); 19A (Be, C, Sm, Pn); 20A (Be, C); 21A (Pn, C, Be); 22A (Be, C); 17B (Pn, Sm, T, Be); 3C (T, Be, Pn)

As usual, feel free to ask if you have any questions. Two more things:

1. How many people need a second copy of their script?

2. This is purely related to stuff outside of the show, but usually casts like to have social-type things on their own time (good for cast bonding), and I was wondering how many people might run into parental issues with the idea of a co-ed sleepover.

Thanks, guys!

Elizabeth

11:43 pm - WE HAVE A REHEARSAL SCHEDULE!
Please remember that this is very rough. Expect it to change at least once. (In fact, as soon as I post it I'm probably going to find something wrong with it.) Yes, we are rehearsing a lot, but we need to make this the best show it can possibly be in the six weeks that we have. For those of you who are in ItW (which is ten out of twelve, I believe), you have Monday to relax before we head into rehearsal. Also, as you may have noticed, both of our rehearsals so far have ended early. In planning the schedule, I have given us slightly more time than I thought we needed so we have some squishy room, and you may be getting out early on some days.

We start out by blocking Act III, and then we have five days of rehearsals where I'm calling various groups of actors (including an all-call.) Basically, I have divided up all of the scenes so that I can call groups of characters at a time. (You may have noticed that our script has decided to make it a new scene every time a new character enters. This is a little odd, but it actually became quite useful for rehearsal-planning purposes.) I will post the list of which scenes we're doing when in a day or two, as soon as I'm sure that I won't be making any changes. This is a bit of an experiment, and I have to warn you that we'll be skipping around, which I hope won't be too confusing. I really think that having more time to spend on individual scenes, and focusing on only a few people at a time, will ultimately bring us a long way in the rehearsal process.

I think that's about it. Oh - I know that there's an event involving the entire music department - "Armed Man," I think. Obviously I don't know much about it, but I heard that it may be on Saturday, March 24. If that is the case, we'll need to reschedule rehearsal and find another place to make up the time. I also hope to get the schedule for music department concerts tomorrow, and that might cause a change or two.

~Elizabeth

EDIT: "Armed Man" IS on March 24. So that rehearsal will have to change.

10:38 pm - Another Rehearsal?
I hope you are all as happy as I am to have finals out of the way and be starting second semester! Now, on to business: I understand that ItW rehearsal may be cancelled this Friday (January 26), and if that ends up being the case (but this is still tentative), I want to hold our second rehearsal on Friday right after school. I regret having this on the one day you have off from ItW, and if you really think you're going to suffer a breakdown if you don't have the day to rest, let me know and I'll try to be sensitive to that. However, I do think it's imperative that we block the show before ItW opens, as I mentioned before auditions, and this may be our last opportunity to rehearse before then. Rehearsal would be scheduled from 2:30-5:00, but if you all are as on-task as you were during our first rehearsal, I anticipate finishing before 5:00. This will leave your entire late afternoon and evening free. We would block Act II, which is shorter than Act I (although it also contains the crazily intense serving scene!)

You can expect a full rehearsal schedule within a few days (subject to changes, of course!)

So far, I've sent out a few emails and checked in with cast members at school to make sure everyone is updated on what's going on, but from here on out, I will only be posting on the livejournal. It's the simplest and most straightforward way that I can communicate with everyone, and I think it's also convenient for you, since everything is in one place and you don't need to sift through dozens of emails. This means that the livejournal needs to become your best friend and you need to be checking it daily. For those of you who have livejournals, this is easy for you, because the entries show up on your friends list. If you don't have one, however, I recommend bookmarking the site and making it part of your daily routine. In between checking your email and checking facebook (or whatever your personal internet activities happen to be), just quickly stop by the site to see if there are any updates. This may seem silly now, but I will definitely be posting more and more frequently as we get into the rehearsal process. I am going to start assuming that if something is on the livejournal, you know about it.

Many of you have posted conflicts on the Yahoo calendar. Please go back and make sure these are complete and you haven't left anything out. If you haven't posted your conflicts, please do so ASAP. (I know some people have mentioned difficulty navigating the Yahoo site. Although I would prefer that you post on the calendar, you may email them to me at madflamingo212@yahoo.com. But I need to have your conflicts, because if I don't know about them, I can't take them into consideration when planning the rehearsal schedule.)

Another reminder that starting on Monday, February 26 (the day we come back from winter break) there will be NO SCRIPTS ALLOWED ONSTAGE. No exceptions. You have a month to memorize, so please plan your time accordingly.

Thank you for your cooperation. I am already so pleased with the work you've been doing - and with your wonderful enthusiasm. Keep it up! :D

We have basic blocking set for the first act of our show!!!!

Thanks for your great work today! We got a lot done, and I'm very pleased. I also noticed that right from the beginning, you were very in character and making big choices, which was wonderful! That's exactly what we need for the show. Right now, I'm just looking for you to make choices, even if you think they may not be the right choices - we have plenty of time to tweak things later. Also, keep in mind that blocking may get a little more complicated once we've really started to work scenes, but for now, go ahead and make movements that feel natural.

For now, you can take a breather to focus on ItW and finals. After finals, we'll have a couple more rehearsals - I figure it will take one or two to block the rest of the show. We may or may not do scene work before ItW opens - it depends on how scheduling works out, but if we do, they'll be limited. Once ItW is over, we have six weeks, not including winter break (during which we won't be rehearsing.) We'll start off doing a lot of in-depth work on individual scenes - this is one of my favorite parts of the rehearsal process, but often it isn't one on which a lot of time is spent. Then we will get into run-throughs of each act, then full run-throughs, followed by, of course, hell week. I apologize that rehearsals are so sporadic right now - once ItW ends and we have more time, you'll get a real rehearsal schedule.

Another important note: We have a few more weeks, then Into the Woods, a week of rehearsals, and Winter Break. We get back from break on Monday, February 26, which is also the day I expect you to have all of your lines memorized. Please plan your time accordingly.

That's all I can think of for now. As usual, approach me whenever if you have any questions. You all are awesome. Good luck with finals!

~Elizabeth

09:25 pm - first rehearsal!
I would like to have our first rehearsal this Wednesday, January 10, from 2:45 to 5:30 in the Little Theater (no ItW rehearsal.) I know how busy most of you are with Into the Woods and finals, but I really feel that we need to start rehearsing before the musical opens, and there won't be much time after finals are over and hell week starts. We will be blocking the first part of the show, and it will involve everyone. Some of you have weekly conflicts that you've posted on the Yahoo group - if so, don't worry about it. We'll work you in later. If you could, please reply and let me know if this works for you. Thanks so much, guys!

06:15 pm
WE'RE ON BREAK!!!!!!!!!! I thought it would never come!

Thanks to everyone for the productive read-through - I think it was really nice to get our footing before this two-week sabbatical. Most of you have your scripts - if you haven't given me your check yet, you're welcome to come to my house to drop it off over break. I'll be gone this Wednesday and Thursday, but other than that I'm home, so you can call or email me to find out the best time to come. If you don't feel you need your script over break, it's fine to wait until January, although I'd really like to have your fees by the Friday we get back (which is January 5, I believe.)

NOW, ABOUT THOSE LINES! ;)
I am not going to ask you to memorize lines before we've blocked the show, which will be after break. I know it's often much harder to memorize scenes before they've been staged, and you'd have to have the script in your hand to write down blocking anyway. I would like you to at least look over your lines and become familiar with them over break, so that once we get into rehearsal, it's not as if you've never seen the lines before - although since we've had the read-through, that hopefully shouldn't be the case. ;) In January, we will agree on a date for you to be memorized - although that will be fairly early in the run. You probably have an idea of how long it takes you to memorize, and if you think you're going to need a long time, you may want to start learning lines now. I'll leave that up to your judgment.

I've heard feedback from a few people that the livejournal is easier to navigate than the Yahoo group. So, for our purposes, any important announcements that the cast needs to know about will be here on the livejournal - so be sure you're checking it! However, the Yahoo calendar is going to help me out A LOT when I'm planning the rehearsal calendar - so please be sure all of your conflicts are posted (and conflicts include one-day affairs as well as classes or other commitments that you have every week.) Other than that, the Yahoo group is pretty much for you to use as you like - a few people have already used it for social-planning purposes, and we can have discussions, ask questions, etc. So to sum it all up, the livejournal is the "official" site for our cast that you should be checking regularly. You won't miss anything important if you don't check the Yahoo group, but you may find it beneficial (and you may be getting the posts as emails anyway.)

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. (And if you're interested in the home video watching marathon, start looking for funny videos!) I wish you all a beautiful, fun, and restive break. Thanks for your enthusiasm!!!! :D

Since I haven't heard from anyone about it being a problem, we're officially on for Thursday! So, the official details:

Who: The cast of The Servant of Two Masters!!!
What: read-through, info meeting, general get-to-know-each-other-ness
When: Thursday, December 14 after 7th period
Where: my house! It takes about one minute to walk to my house from SHS, so I'm thinking that we can just meet in front of the Little Theater after seventh and walk there as a group. (Let me know if you're walking with the group so we'll know whether or not to wait for you.) Alternatively, you can just show up at my house at around 3:20ishishish. Address and directions will be on the Yahoo group.
Why: Why not? It should be tremendously fun, I'd really like to get a read-through in before break, and I will probably have a lot of information that I'm going to be giving you.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Sarah and I announced at the info meeting before auditions about the new rule regarding fees, which went into effect with Present Laughter. Acting in a student production now requires a $50 fee. If this is a problem for any of you, please don't hesitate to talk to me privately, and we'll get everything worked out. If not, please try to remember to bring your money to the read-through. You won't be able to take home a script until you've paid. I hope that's all right.

Also, I know Lexi mentioned needing to go to the Dwyer video. I'm not sure that we'll be done by 5:30, although we should be close. It's fine for you to leave early; we should be close to done, so I don't think you'll miss all that much.

I think that's about it. Let me know if you have any questions. (And it would also be super swell if you could confirm that you've seen this note. ;) I love all of you and am SO thrilled and honored to have you as part of my cast. I know I probably end every note by saying that, but I wouldn't say it if it weren't true. :D

In case you aren't on the Yahoo group yet, here is a copy of a message I posted there. Please respond. Thanks! :)

*************************************************

Aight. Not everyone has joined the Yahoo group, but as we don't have
much time before Christmas break, I'm going to go ahead and throw out
Thursday, December 14, as a date for our first read-through/info
meeting. It would be right after seventh period gets out, probably at
my house (which is walking distance from SHS). There is no Into the
Woods rehearsal because of a choir event, but I don't know of anyone
in the cast who's in choir this semester (let me know if I'm wrong),
so that shouldn't be an issue. We'll do what we can if we can't find a
date that works for everyone, but if possible, I would love to have
everyone there. You will get your scripts and a ton of other important
information - and it'll be fun. Anyway, please let me know if this
date works for you. If it doesn't, there are a couple of other dates
we can consider. You can comment on the Yahoo group, send me an email,
or comment on the Livejournal. Thanks and love!!!

06:25 am - Soooooo, now that we've all been cast...
I've officially created a Yahoo group, so as soon as I get it ready (hopefully sometime on Tuesday), I'll email the link to all of you. There is a nifty calendar where everyone can post their conflicts, and as soon as I have the script ready, we will hold our first read-through/informational meeting/first official cast gathering!!!! Woot! (ItW rehearsal is pretty much every day, so I don't know when that will be...but we'll figure something out.) If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask me, but hopefully I can give everyone more of an idea of what's going on when we have the meeting. I'm looking forward to working with all of you beautiful and fabulous people!

I am beyond excited. I'm not sure if there's anyway to describe it.

Thanks!

~Elizabeth
